Welcome to Brad's online memory archives.

Secret Savings

In between rain showers this past weekend, I did a little cleaning of the area under my back porch. I didn’t get it all done, but I did get some trash bagged up. Among the stuff stashed there were several long, straight pieces of wood under the porch.

I have come to realize I have a bit of an fixation, and though it’s a little embarrassing, I will record it for the memory archive: I am obsessed with the idea of walking with a staff. I think it probably has a lot to do with being interested in wizards when I was young, and even now really liking Tolkien’s Gandalf (or maybe I should say McKellen’s Gandalf).

As I have cut trees down in my garden, I’ve kept any long, staff-like branches. What’s interesting is the diverse variety woods I have now: cherry, apple, cedar, and eucalyptus. I will be letting them cure in my basement, then maybe doing something else with them. Or maybe I’ll just let my inner Brad keep dreaming.

Fortunately, they're long enough for the ceiling brackets.

What you need to learn to do is fight with a staff. Lloyd has been watching The Walking Dead, and I’m embarrassed to say that I got sucked in. There was a guy on there who refused to kill non-zombie, threatening people – he just took them out with his staff all Zen-Jedi-like.

    Then you can teach me.

It looks like those brackets were put there for such a time as this.

Our Former Pastor, Dennis Maaske, walked everyday, in the area of St. Paul’s, with a ‘staff’…..when he lived here. …..Looks Elegant & Gentlemanly ‘European’ to me!!!! Especially in the rolling hills of Washington County, Nebraska!!! 🙂

Did anyone think that it makes someone look like a shepherd? Perfect thoughts for Lutheran Teachers and pastors! Go for it Brad. Grandpa Hummel made dozens of what he called ‘walking’ sticks. So many designs twists and curls. I bet Mom might have several sitting around our house. We’ll check for you. Have a great week in the Lord!
