Boating the Bay

Today is my half birthday! Woo hoo! Happy Half Birthday to me!

This is a picture-heavy post because I had an Adventure yesterday. One of Denis’ friends has a boat and invited a few people, including me, to come out to the Chesapeake Bay for a ride.

We met in Middle River. It always surprises me how quickly I can get to the Chesapeake Bay from my house. Rene’s boat is really nice – small enough to be light and maneuverable, but big enough to fit four adults and three kids.

That rig raises the boat out of the water when not in use.

There was lots of selfie-taking. I tried one too. It came out pretty good, except I still had sunscreen showing on my face. I’m a bit of an over-doer when it comes to sunscreen.

The sun was bright, so I'm a little squinty.

I was surprised at how violently the boat bounced when we hit waves, especially when we were going fast. I was in the front at first, so I was receiving the strongest bounces. The boys were in the middle and were screaming a lot. It was great. As soon as the bumps started, the littlest one made sure to grab what was most important to save it:

Donuts!

Donuts!

Our first stop was to go swimming. We lowered anchor and the boys jumped right in. I didn’t plan to swim, but they were having so much fun, I had to join them. After I was in the water, I kept reaching to the ground to bring up shells. Almost every time, there would be a tiny crab walking on them. It was cool.

The water was about four feet deep. It was slightly salty.

We decided to go to the Baltimore Inner Harbor next. Our route took us under the Key Bridge and past Fort Carroll. I was so excited to be so close to the fort. I previously wrote about the fort on Bradaptation, so I knew a little about it already.

It was crowded with birds. Theses are cormorants. I looked it up.

The painted warning made me chuckle.

The Inner Harbor is kind of tucked in around a corner, so as you approach Baltimore, you don’t see it. Many of the harbor buildings were unmistakable though.

Some of us got off the boat at Fell’s Point and ordered takeout from a place called Kooper’s. Then we got back on the boat and ate. It was tasty.

We watched some men's Olympic volleyball while we waited.

The trip back to the marina was nice. I sat in the back and watched the world go by. The bumps from the waves were much smaller in back.

So peaceful...

What an awesome day! Thanks, Rene! (He won’t see this, but I wanted to say it anyway)

That kiddo has priorities in order, alright – “Save the donuts!” HA!

Glad you didn’t elect to swim in the Inner Harbor – I understand after the heavy rainfall a week or so ago the water wheel/garbage collector got a bit swamped and I can only imagine..ick….

Looks like a marvelous day – now you are energized for more deck work..right? 😉
