Over Christmas, my mom shared some life insurance money with us. Over the course of my visit, I found out that when my mom had received a similar gift from her father after her mother’s death, she got some artwork for her house. These special pieces have hung in her bathroom for years, and every time she sees them, they remind her of her mom.
I decided I would do something similar. But what would I get? I have for a long time resisted getting a certified movie prop replica of a sword from “The Lord of the Rings” movies. I wanted to get Gandalf’s sword Glamdring. More than once, I have gotten all the way to the last step where I could click the button to confirm, then decided not to get it. But it seemed silly to get such a thing as a reminder of my dad.
Then I remembered that I had seen a retro-style post card design for the Smoky Mountains, and wondered if I could get that as a poster. I found a place that did offer it as a poster, and could mount the poster to wood and make a permanent wall-hanging out of it. It arrived this past weekend. It is really nice:

…and then I also got the sword. Ha! It was an impulse buy. Hey, what can I say? I got that trait from my dad. If I’m being honest, I think this crazy, amazing, impulsively-gotten, movie prop sword from a nationally recognized knife and sword company like United Cutlery is something my dad might have preferred as a gift for me more than the wall hanging. It makes me smile to think about. Thanks, Dad.
It came with a display plaque, but I am holding it to show how truly large it is. It’s magnificent!
