I have been looking for a piano for my classroom. In Maryland, free pianos on Craigslist are abundant. In Maui, no piano is free. Even the roughest-looking specimen is multiple hundreds of dollars.
And then two days ago, I saw a listing. It was very cheap. I think I could swing it! I emailed the person and explained that I wanted it for school choir and even said where I worked.
She didn’t email back until yesterday, but said she would be interested in donating the piano since it was for a school. Awesome! She included her phone number, so I called her and arranged a meeting.
That’s where things went a little wonky. They lived in the Upcountry area. She sent me their address, but she also gave some written directions. She had told me that after the zip line place, I should take the right branch of the road, not the left. I took the left because that’s what my phone told me to do. I ended up on a rough, narrow road that was lined by giant old trees and thick undergrowth. I was so glad it wasn’t night time. Yikes!
I was driving very slowly.
I ended up calling her again, and she got me turned around and on the right road. It only added about 45 minutes to my trip.
The piano really needs tuning, but is otherwise functional, so I was happy to tell her I would take it. I’ll get my principal to write her a receipt for the donation. Now I just have to figure out how to get a piano into my pickup truck and then into my classroom. How many non-bodybuilders does it take to lift a piano?

Great news about the donation – you know what we often say: “you have not because you ask not.” I wager transporting a free piano that you can use in your school will be even more fun than a dump run used to be, too. May it be a blessing to you and your students. (P.S. : did they never have a piano at your new school for choir, or is it just in another room and in use already or…?)
