Beachcombing

A few weeks ago, a friend from church asked me if I would be interested in helping pick up litter at a beach. He is part of the Kiwanis club here, and their group has an arrangement with a shipping company to pick up litter, and load it into the company’s truck, where it will be taken to the dump. In the name of community relations, the shipping company even donates money to the Kiwanis for the operation.

The beach had so much trash on it. So… much… trash…

I started here, and spent a couple hours without getting very far.

It was fun to meet some new people. I even got invited to join the club, but they always meet at noon. I’d never be able to do that. It was also interesting to see what kind of trash was there. Lots of plastic. I guess Lauren was right. All the plastic DOES end up in the ocean.

The group spread out and cleaned a nice swath of beach. We worked for about three hours, then had lunch together in the shade of the garbage truck. It was a fine way to spend a Saturday morning.

It was a breezy, beautiful day.

I will refrain from saying ‘I told you so’ because I am alternating between being very sad and very grateful. Thank you for cleaning that up, Brad. You guys are heros!

    What Lauren said.

To echo Lauren – that seems like it would be simultaneously gratifying and frustrating.
    Did you find any money?
And aren’t you free at noon all summer? Or do you have year round school?

Hmmm… I guess I AM free all summer at noon. Maybe I’ll look into joining. He said the Kiwanis club does all kinds of service projects. I like that.

I did not find any money. The only thing I was excited to find was a cool-looking rock. But I don’t think it’s a rock – I think it’s a seed.
