There was something fluttering outside my door when I came home at night. It almost looked like a hummingbird. Are there hummingbirds on Maui? I know there aren’t any bats here. It wasn’t a hummingbird. It was a moth.
It reminded me of the tomato worm moths that Grandpa Hummel disliked. They would lay eggs on his tomato plants, and their larvae would eat the leaves. When we were visiting his house, he’d give us fly swatters and tell us to kill them. At least, I think I remember that.
It was hard to get a clear picture. It was dark outside, and the math was moving.
Those things are bizarre. I remember watching one when it was drinking from a plant outside and thinking something was wrong with that hummingbird. God makes some strange creatures.
Surprise! We do have bats on Maui…Hoary bats! In the past, there’s been a lot of controversy over the big windmills on the West Maui Mountain, because they kill quite a few of them. The Hawaiian hoary bat is one of two species of mammal that are endemic to the islands, the other being the Hawaiian monk seal. Sorry! The teacher in me had to say something!
With the way your picture turned out, it looks like that moth has feathers.
