The valley between the West Maui Mountains and Haleakala – that is, the part of Maui that I spend much of my time on – is pretty flat. Even Kahului doesn’t have very tall buildings.
But as I approach Kahului in the morning, I always see this a tall landmark : a large, wind-blown tree. I don’t know what kind of tree it is because I’m still learning trees here in Maui, but I like it.
Holy cow – it’s like a life-size bonsai tree. (I am aware how stupid that sounds.)
That is a very dramatic photo, Brad. The tree, the headlights, the splashes of red from the truck and the lights … photoshop a shark with a martini in there and you’ve got a new tourism poster!
Dang it. Sylvan. I meant to write sylvan. I don’t know if sylvian is even a word. Now that I search the internet, it looks like it’s someone’s last name.
I just have to tell you my funny story with that particular tree! I was sitting at that stoplight in the rain when I heard something fall on my car. I thought it was a small branch. Pretty soon I saw a big tail slide down my windshield. It was a rat!! It slipped on the branch and fell on my car! It was holding on to my windshield wiper and looking at me in the driver’s seat. I was in traffic and needed to go through the green light. It held on until I got to the sugar mill in Puunene. I was able to pull over and chase it off my car. It ran into the cane field! I wish I would have taken a photo with my phone of him looking at me driving!!
Rats and centipedes? You are a warrior, Diane!
Ha! I guess I don’t think of rats climbing trees, but it makes sense. I mean, they climb inside the walls of buildings. Trees can’t be that different.
