The seventh grade Literature book for fourth quarter is “A Single Shard”. It’s about a boy in 11th century Korea who is fascinated by the celadon pottery a grouchy master makes. The story talks about some pottery that is inlaid with different colors.
I saw an idea online to use a recipe for cookies that are “inlaid” with hard candy. It seemed like the perfect activity!
I got some pre-made sugar cookie dough, then crushed up some Jolly Ranchers. The kids cut pieces out of the un-cooked cookies, then filled the holes with various colors of candy.
The room smelled like fruity candy.
The kids made many creative designs.
The cookies puffed up a lot and obscured some of the designs.
The finished products were a little disappointing because the dough puffed up and swallowed the candy. Also, the cookies are a little weird to eat. The cookie is soft and easy to chew, but the candy was still Jolly Rancher, and really hard to chew. I was worried I’d loose a crown.
Still, the kids had fun, and now maybe they understand a little better what “inlay work” is.
