Seed Starting

There is a hill next to our school property that is overgrown with weeds and scrub. I’ve thought it would be fun to plant some things there.

I am most interested in growing some crownflower trees there. Crownflowers are related to milkweed, and are hosts plants for monarch butterflies. The flowers can be made into leis, and was Queen Lili’uokalani’s favorite kind of lei. I gathered seeds a few months ago, thinking I would grow some trees from scratch. I never got around to it.

Then on Friday, I was talking with David about growing tomatoes here, and I told him about some seeds that are produced and packaged for Hawaii. When I saw them in Walmart yesterday, I had to get some.

Now I had TWO kinds of seeds to grow. (actually three – I got regular tomatoes and cherry tomatoes). It was enough to get me to buy a seed-starting tray. I got it all put together and set up on my lanai.

If the package is correct, I will have tomatoes in 90 days.

My grandma, my mom, and I all had crownflower leis as part of our bridal bouquets. They are a lovely flower.
