Making Masks

During band period, the kids who aren’t in band take an enrichment class. Josh and I take turns – he’s on Tuesday, and I’m on Thursday. It’s a cross-graded class, so we can’t use the same materials until the fourth year.

I’ve done a few different topics, and was feeling a little stuck this year, but then I thought about all the Religion Class materials I’ve collected and written over the years. Surely there was something usable among those plans.

There was! Part of my ninth grade curriculum in Baltimore was a unit on Revelation. It’s got slide presentations and worksheets and even a test. I decided to change it a little for middle schoolers. I’m leaving out the worksheet activities, and replacing them with art projects.

The first lesson included some introductory materials, but then launched right into the letters to the seven churches. After reading the letters, I had the kids make a mask to represent one of the churches. I chose a single verse for each church that had some kind of usable imagery, and set the kids to work.

The masks look good. I was happy.

I let them choose which church. All but one are represented.

They worked on the next assignment yesterday: a drawing of Revelation 4 and 5 – God on his throne, with the Lamb next to him, surrounded by the Four Living Creatures and the Twenty-four Elders.

Here is the instruction sheet, if you want to see the verses I suggested for mask imagery: http://bradaptation.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/The-Faces-of-Seven-Churches.rtf

I think those are splendid! I’d like to read the verses now to see which church is which. (I have a very poor memory.) This is such a good idea, Brad!

I added a link at the end of the post. It’s the assignment paper I handed out to them, and it includes the verses for each church.

You are so awesome, what great ideas you have and then to see actual fun items from them! Yay for art projects! Yay kids! Visual expression is always good!
