Becoming a Number

I have some strong philosophical objections to the security at airports. I think it’s just a lot of theater for the illusion of safety and all it does is cause a lot of inconvenience and delay.

To add insult to injury, they now offer a way to bypass that inconvenience and delay if you pay. That’s extortion, plain and simple.

In spite of these strong feelings, yesterday I went to a precheck place and paid my fee. In two to three weeks, I’ll have a number that lets me go to the short security line that lets me keep my shoes on. I caved. I feel dirty.

I am sorry. You travel so much that this is kind of a necessity, but a created necessity. Also….. is that ‘travel’ place located in a seedy hotel? I think you got robbed.

Theater for the illusion of safety….lol. so did you have to stay at that seedy motel to pay your extortion fee? Don’t be surprised if you feel someone following you at the airport…..

The way you worded it, I can’t tell if the precheck place and the paid fee is a one-shot deal, or permanent. Do they run an extensively intensive background check to “verify” you, then you’re part of the “in crowd”? I’ve not explored enough of your blogspace to determine where you are, exactly, though it seems to be Hawaii… if so, is this something that is unique to that state, or can anyone in the US apply to be part of this “in crowd”?

I like that picture… makes you wonder if a student of Japanese was in charge of numbering the rooms.

Lauren and Debbie are spot on — you may have been had if you applied at The Backward Hotel! 😀
