Five Flats

I played piano for church yesterday. My regular schedule is first and third Sundays. What was not regular about my playing yesterday is that we did Matins.

I really like the Matins service. The Te Deum is especially cool, because it has this crazy minor part that has five flats. Wow!

Uh, oh… I was going to have to play five flats. I practiced and practiced and practiced in the morning. I got it down pretty well.

In the actual service it went well too… until I had to switch back to the major key signature for the last three verses. I stayed in minor. The congregation was confused and sang the wrong tune for the whole next verse. We got back on track for the last two verses, but the damage was done.

That’s alright – it keeps everyone one their toes!

I love Matins, too. A good service with lots of harmony. I was trying to think of my internal analogy for harmony yesterday. It’s like taking one flavor (sweet) and making it fuller (cake). Or it’s like weaving – taking many strands to make something strong that is made of many little parts. Neither of these are good, but I sure like harmony. 🙂

Wow, what a major attempt to play and get thru! Sounds like only minor mistakes…. If i saw all those b’s, i would run away, arms flailing! I’m allergic to flats. I admire you playing for church, that’s really awesome. At the rate i’m going i could probably play for church when i’m 95?

In singers today, we were practicing a song, and the key signature changed to have six! And I thought five looked tough, but that was just insanity.
