Cucumber Comparison

I had a cucumber harvest! All three of my varieties bore fruit. It was an awesome opportunity to do a taste comparison. They look super-big in the picture below, but they were all kind of smallish. We’ll see if they get any bigger as the plants continue to grow.

L to R: Shiyo Kyuri, Muncher, Spacemaster

The ‘Shiyo Kyuri’ is a Japanese type cucumer. I got it because it was sold as being especially good for growing in Hawaii’s climate. It has a good flavor, and crisp texture.

The ‘Muncher’ has a slightly different flavor. I think if I had it by itself, I would have thought nothing of it, but when tasted side-by-side with the others, I didn’t like it as much. It is nice that this variety doesn’t have any spiky things on the cucumber though.

The ‘Spacemaster’ variety has good flavor and texture. After taking this picture, I discovered a second cucumber on the plant, so I had two of these. Yum!

I like all three varieties, but owing to that the fact that ‘Spacemaster’ is the smallest of the three plants, yet has many tiny cucumbers growing on it, I think it’s the winner for me.

Hi Brad, I am planting Shiyo Kyuri plants also.
Did you grow yours up a trellis or let them sprawl?
I assume this is NOT a bush variety.

Hi John. I grew mine in a pot under not very ideal conditions. The plant didn’t get very big before it started to weaken, but it did look like a vining variety. I think if the cucumber would have hung from the vine it might have grown straighter. It curled when it touched the ground. It was a very tasty cucumber. I hope you have a great harvest! 🙂
