Happy Hibiscus

I had a lazy morning yesterday. As I sat on the couch, I saw that the hibiscus had a flower ready to open. I have always wanted to do a time lapse one one of those.

I strapped my phone to a broomstick to get it pointed correctly. Unfortunately, that meant a video in portrait orientation. I’m almost always a landscape guy… Oh well. It turned out pretty good. I think it ran for at least 45 minutes.

I also took a picture of the flower later in the day. It got nice and big, and it lightened up a little. It’s so pretty. I love my hibiscus.

That was glorious! How cool that you time-lapsed it – it opened so quickly! I never would have guessed that it would be open in an hour. So, so cool! God is amazing.

I love, love, love hibiscus!!! Is that an orange flower? I’m accustomed to seeing pink and red ones.

Yes, it’s orange. I did get it for the color, but also for the size. This has the biggest flowers I could find. As the plant matures, the flowers are supposed to get as big as 11″ across. Woo! I’m excited to see that!

Plus did you know…. All parts of Hibiscus sabdariffa are edible: calyxes, leaves, and flowers. The calyxes are the ingredient used to make Hibiscus tea, a tangy Vitamin C-rich delight. They’re also used to make sauces, jams, and other treats. The large green leaves pack a tangy punch and can also be used to make tea.Feb 4, 2019

I would check the subspecies to be sure. I wonder if they would make pretty wedding cake decorations and if they stay open and hold up well.
