Perplexing Plants

When I first set up my aquarium, I bought some special wood that is heavier than water. When I dismantled the aquarium last March, I put the wood out behind my classroom to dry out.

It’s back in my aquarium, but something weird is happening – little plants are sprouting in the wood. At first, I thought maybe they were just weed seeds that fell onto wood while it was outside. But the longer the plants survive under water, the more I think that maybe they’re aquatic plants of some kind.

Did the seeds just come along with the wood when I first ordered it? Did they hitch a ride on the aquatic plants I put in the aquarium when I re-started it this August? It’s a mystery!

See the little bright green sprouts?
What could they be?

There is so much in this post that is boggling my mind. Wood that is heavier than water? Water lettuce? I still think it’s weird that seaweed is a thing.

I like the peaceful green color. How can plants grow on wood? Is it a type of moss?
