Something for Lent

I haven’t had my students do something for Lent since I came to Maui. Our spring break always came so quickly after Ash Wednesday. Or Ash Wednesday was actually during break.

This year is different. Our spring break coincides with Easter. So I’m having both seventh and eighth grade do something. They can give something up, or take on some new good habit or behavior. Many of the kids see it as a fun challenge. I’m looking forward to hearing about their progress.

I always do something too, so I can talk about it with them. This year, I’ve decided to read every day. I will read for at least 30 minutes each day.

I have, over time, lost my ability to read from books. I read short blurbs and jokes from screens all the time, but that’s just not the same thing, is it?

This should be the start of something good…

I started this book over Christmas break. I haven’t cracked it open since then.

Oh, that sounds like an excellent goal. I think I might like to join you! Is it copying if I choose the same book?

No, Lauren – you’d be making a mini book club is all. Enjoy!
