Sentimental Song

Yesterday at my church, the choir sang “Despair Not, My Soul, Nor to Sorrow Give Way”. I haven’t heard that song in years, but from my spot in the congregation, I softly sang the bass part – all three verses – from memory.

I must’ve sung it in high school hundreds of times. It was fun to sing it again. Here are the lyrics:

Despair not, my soul, nor to sorrow give way,
Remember that God is thy friend every day.
Though now you encounter misfortunes unnumbered,
Soon follows the sunshine in glorious rays.
Content thee, be cheerful, all sorrow: Away!

Much fretting and weeping will bring no relief,
Who trusteth in God will soon comfort receive.
His Spirit console Thee, Oh, ponder His mercy,
When life is perplexing, unhappy, and sad,
Look upward to heaven, and you’ll soon be glad.

To God I commit me, my body and soul,
He’ll grant me contentment and blessing untold.
To Him my defender, myself I surrender,
And though I must walk through the valley of death,
I know He’ll protect me and do what He saith.

That is a great song. One of my dad’s favorites.

Oh, that is a lovely song, and perfect for this particular season in our lives. Praying for you, Deborah, and thank you, Brad. 🙂

    Yea for great memories!

As a grad of CTCRF, we had not this tune in our repertoire – but I looked it up on YouTube and saw what Lauren and Lloyd had posted from Seward’s choir. Sounds lovely, though the setting would not be one for singing by an entire congregation…and I wish I knew the rest of the words, since I can’t recall ever singing it myself.

Carol, I added the lyrics at the end of the post. I should have included them for the memory archive anyway.
