Shield Sighting

I got a staghorn fern last summer, and mounted it on a board. I’m planning to hang it on the wall in my back yard. In the meantime, it has been on the ground and propped against the wall.

Through the summer, I was excited to see that it grew some new leaves. A couple of days ago, I was even more excited to see that it has some shield fronds!

Staghorn ferns grow two different kinds of leaves… the “antler” fronds grow straight out, and when they’re bigger, they look like the horns of a stag. (It’s what gives the plant it’s name). The “shield” fronds grow flat against the roots. They help hold dirt and plant matter for the roots to grow in.

Look! Here’s one of the new shield fronds!
