Welcome to Brad's online memory archives.

Squids will be Squids

I went to the mall yesterday. I spent the morning and early afternoon in our church’s Compassion Center, and wanted to reward myself with some mall food.

While I was at the mall, I had my diamond tested. It’s not a diamond. The lady said it was a nice fake though. Probaby cubic zirconia. Hmmm… maybe I’ll check into setting it.

As is my wont, I also went to the bookstore. When going through the bargain books, I saw one by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith that I’d never seen before. It was called Squids will be Squids. It’s a collection of hilarious modern day fables. One of my favorites is about a bundle of straw that wants to play games with a book of matches, but the book of matches wants to cheat at all the games. Moral of the story: Don’t play with matches. Ha!

This book will go on my “Spare Time Reading” shelf in my class room, even though many of the kids won’t likely appreciate it. I’ll know it’s there, and that’s all that is important.

Moral: Don't ever listen to a talking bug.

Is that Humpty Dumpty? Or a big balloon that gets popped?

How old was the ‘lady’ at the mall who checked your diamond? If she was just seventeen, saying, “Like, I don’t know – it’s probably fakey, but it’s fierce. *gum smack*”, maybe you should go somewhere else.

Heh. She was thirty-something. I actually did take it to two places in the mall. The second person who checked it was a woman with a European accent. I knew her opinion would be trustworthy.

They both tested it with the same kind of little machine. It was quick and free.

I’m going to start talking with a European accent at parent-teacher conferences. “Zee child, he ees not too bright.”

I am sure I will see one of the stories as a chapel message soon! The pictures look cool.

We have that book! I bought it when my kids were in elementary school during a book fair. Love it!

Lauren – I love your use of the word “fierce” – are you a Project Runway lover as well?

    • Lauren

Yeah, I’m kind of fabulous that way in a super-fierce way.

(I tried to fit ‘trannie’ in there but I’m not quite sure what it means.)

After the first few episodes this season, I told my husband, “I just want that Christian character to come to our house and hang out for a day. He cracks me up!” My husband said no.

Let’s go get Christian ourselves. We’ll keep him like a pet!
