Roller Skating

The eighth graders had an end-of-year skating party yesterday during the school day. It was really a lot of fun. In the morning they signed autograph books and had some breakfast foods and hung out. Then they went to the skating rink. No one else was there, so it was pretty cool. I was also excited to have a reason to wear my “skeletons who are skating and also on fire” tie. It was a gift from a student a couple years ago.

I decided to skate with them. I think the last time I roller-skated was when I myself was in eighth grade. I was a little wobbly at first, but after a while, it all seemed to come back to me. I ended up skating most of the time. It was quite fun. I still can’t skate backwards though. I just couldn’t figure it out.

Isn't it a super-cool tie?

Jon could skate backwards, dang it.

I am proud to say that we didn’t fall once! That’s saying a LOT considering the kids that were dropping right and left.
Brad forgot to mention all of the Skateland rules he broke!
By the way Brad – that’s Aaron, not Jon!!

Dang it. I’ve never done that all year, and the first time I do it, it’s in print. Sorry, Aaron, if you’re lurking.

Hey, for a second I thought I was reading lloydandlauren. Lloyd also went skating with his middle school kids!

I’m quite impressed with your skating skilz, although you and Michele should really try falling. It’s all the rage, I’m told. (At least that what they told me when I went along that one year.)

I see you went with the traditional skates. I too went traditional yesterday, but mostly because they ran out of the ice skates but with wheels. I like the way the new ones give my ankles that feeling of invulnerability.

I was bummed that Brad’s fushia (he won’t let me call them pink) skates matched my outfit better than the ugly green ones I was stuck with.

As for my ankles – I have a blister on the inside right ankle from only going in a counter-clockwise direction the whole time. Is that the main direction in Seward?

While you “kids” were away, some of us had fun confusing our Admissions Directress while she was giving a school tour:
“This is the – oh, my; why are you in here? Oh, that’s right! Yes, —– normally teaches — but today she’s in this room because the regular teacher went with the 8th graders …” I heard that happened in more than one location and I am sure added to the quality tour for those prospective families. Perhaps they were given a quiz at the end of their tour? “Match the teacher to her real room and subject:” Not that they’d remember in the fall anyway….

I am also jealous that I couldn’t go skating. I used to be quite good on indoor skates in my day, but that was decades [and quite a few pounds] ago. Glad it all went well, no bones were broken or lives lost. Keep your eye on the blister, Michele – no limping allowed on graduation day now!
