Welcome to Brad's online memory archives.

Wall Wires

I replaced the thermostat in my house. I decided to go with something programmable, but not something that is connected to the internet. I’m a little leery of having too many devices reporting my activities to our future machine overlords.

Putting the new thermostat was more complicated that changing an outlet or a light fixture. There were a lot of wires involved. Here’s what the old one looked like:

Fortunately, the instructions were very clear. They even included little stickers to label the wires.

And now I have a new thermostat! I have set the air conditioner to be cold at bed time, then to get warm right before I wake up. And of course it’s warm during the day while I’m gone. Look at me saving money! Yay, Brad!

That one looks like it has a menu with very clear directions. We have Honeywells at school but they are strangely difficult to use.

(*whispered* I’m proud of you for staying away from the internet version. They’re too dangerous. I fear for our safety.) I mean, the Internet version is fabulous. Long live Zorg.

…and that’s why I’m hanging on to my flip phone and why we’ll never have Alexa or any of her species in our home. Machine overlords indeed!

Congratulations on the successful installation! [I wager that if I ever tried that I’d wind up accidentally doing the exact opposite and wondering why I was so hot in bed.]
