Field Trip

We went on a field trip for school yesterday. First, we went to a water recycling facility. It was interesting. It wasn’t a wastewater plant – they take partially treated water, and clean it some more. It’s not drinkable, but it gets used for other things like irrigation and coolant water.

The visit included an activity where kids tried to filter muddy water and make it as clear as possible. It was entertaining and educational.

Our next stop was nearby. It was a small aquarium at the end of a pier in an area called Manhattan Beach.

Despite its small size, it was an interesting place. They had a tide pool tank where you could touch things, and several small tanks with interesting inhabitants.

When we got back to school, I was tired! Whew! I took a nap when I got home.

That is so cool! I’m so glad you didn’t get rained out for the field trip. It seems like that could have definitely been a possibility.

I’m curious to know how they tried to have the kids filter water. Rocks, sand and charcoal? I’ve tried a little bit of that with the preschoolers but it’s not as meaningful as it is to me. 😀

Lauren, I forgot to answer this:
They gave them dirty water, and a few tools/materials. There were rocks, but no sand or charcoal. There was a sieve, various meshes and cloths, a funnel, a turkey baster, and a sponge. The kids who got the cleanest water were the most patient ones who filtered multiple times. It was really interesting to watch the different processes of different kids.

You were down by the ocean!!!

I’m really close to the ocean all the time, but I hardly ever see it. I also forget about it because I’m in a big city and surrounded by buildings and pavement all the time, and living in Hawaii made me associate the ocean with less urban surroundings.
