Yesterday, we started the day by going to Ho’okipa. It’s the beach where you can watch surfers from an overlook.
The beach below is fun too.
It always has turtles at it. We went down for a closer look:
We had gotten a later start, so by the time we were done at Ho’okipa, it was lunch time. We stopped in Paia, because it was right on the way.
I was amazed to see a pay phone! I had to know if it was functioning, so I risked contamination to pick it up and listen. No dial tone.
We ate at a restaurant off the main drag. It was delightful.
In the afternoon, I went to my regularly-scheduled exercise appointment. I exercised with Cristina when I lived here, and have been doing it by Zoom since I moved, but the last couple of times, I’ve been back in person. So fun!
On my drive there, I had seen a lot of smoke on the other side of the highway. The grass was definitely on fire. We soon heard sirens, and then saw a helicopter fly back and forth, taking water in a bucket and dumping it on the fire.
When I was done with my session, I checked the map. They had closed the highway and were diverting all the traffic to South Kihei Road. It was at a standstill. Ugh.
Cristina offered to let me sit in her back yard to wait it out. In about 45 minutes, things were clear again. Whew!
For dinner, we went to Ma’alaea. We had a great view of the ocean and Haleakala as we ate. What a wonderful end to the day.
Mom heads back to Nebraska today so she can catch Caleb’s ordination. Please pray for a safe flight, and maybe some sleep on the overnight flight.
That was a fun-packed day indeed – fire not withstanding. So glad you got to do so many things while Mom was there with you.
Safety and sleep for Mom on the way home. Blessings to Caleb in his ministry.
How much longer can you stay, and are there people/things with which you are yet to be reunited?
Hey, I know some of those places! How cool that you had a lovely last day on the island together (except for the fire).
Did you look at Christina at any time and say, “You’re on mute”? If not, lost opportunity.
