Apple Adventure

The last couple of years, I’ve heard about apple farms north and east of LA, but apple season always passes before I get there.

But not this year! I went to the apple orchard yesterday!

There are a bunch of orchards all together, but this one is the one I’ve heard about the most. They have “pick your own” apples. They also have “cut your own” flowers. Zinnias and sunflowers, this time of year:

The place also had food and a store and live music. You could really make a day of it there!

The apples were up a hill. Whew! It was a bit of a walk. Picking the apples was fun, but they were mostly small and not very ripe-looking. I got ‘Pippin’ apples and ‘Granny Smith’ apples.

The view was gorgeous.

On my way down the hill, I stopped at one more area that had ‘Winesap’ apples. They were the prettiest of all the ones I picked.

I haven’t tasted all of them yet. I had one Winesap. It wasn’t the sweetest apple I’ve had, but it was fresh and crispy.

Winesaps are one of my favorite apples. They are not very common around here. There us also a variety I like called Arkansas Blacks, that are tart and very crispy. They grow in NC , Brady brought me some once when he visited his parents. There are so many newer apple varieties these days. I’ve been trying to taste many of them.

Dang it. There are places like that around here and I’ve never gone. You make it look fun!

We had apple trees all over in Western Colorado, and several trees up at our family’s garden. It wasn’t fun, though – no store, no food, and the only music was Little Lauren complaining about having to do work.
