Sunday Step-In

For the last two years, I’ve been so involved at church, that I haven’t been able to visit other places on Sunday mornings. At my new church, I’m mostly just a congregation member, so I have some agency.

Yesterday, I visited the Roman Catholic church across the street from my church and school.

It was interesting. The sanctuary is large and beautiful. The service started at 7:30am, which was awesome. As I came in for services, the congregation was absolutely silent, which is different from my church. During the service, there was no music, which I think was by design – I think this service has no music, for those who don’t care about it, and want to have a shorter service.

I couldn’t quite follow the service, and didn’t have anything to help me follow along. Maybe there was something in the pew book, but I couldn’t find it. The sermon wasn’t very Lutheran. (Heh.) I did not participate in communion.

I didn’t really say much except “hi” to people, so I was in and out pretty quickly.

It was a really fun visit, and I’m glad I went. And I’m so excited to visit other churches in the future. There’s a church that is so close to my house I could walk to it. Maybe that one will be next.

A service without music, even for communion? That is so …. different.

That is so cool that you do that. I’ve said for decades that I’d like to do the same but haven’t. You are an inspiration!

Since Thurman retired mid-September, we have been enjoying worshiping with a variety of congregations throughout the area. It is always interesting to see and hear how the rest of the body of Christ does their sabbath thing, I agree. One Sunday while we were vacationing in Tennessee, the pastor invited everyone to go into the center aisle and do as they used to before COVID – hold hands and sing the Lord’s Prayer together. It was moving…
