Vintage Victuals

There was a middle school track meet during the day yesterday, and most of the students participated, so the ones who stayed at school didn’t have a regular class schedule. We did a few service projects instead.

There’s a storage container on campus that has emergency supplies in case we are stuck on campus for a while. Among the supplies are emergency food and water kits. The packages have a shelf life of five years. Before they expire, we are sending them to an organization who can share them with homeless people. We loaded them into a van, and then replaced them with new ones that were delivered yesterday.

In the interest of Science, we opened one. There were six nutrition bars. The instructions say to eat two per day – three days worth of food. I looked at the ingredients. The first two were sugar and flour.

Of course we had to try it. It tasted like a weird cookie. It was sweet and kind of bland. But then it had an unusual after-taste. Sort of… vinegary? I would definitely be able to eat these if there were some kind of apocalyptic earthquake or zombie attack, but I would not choose to eat it under normal circumstances.

Hmm…I’d never thought of the possibility of being stuck at school for days in a row for any reason – good planning there on someone’s part…except for the aftertaste of the “food”, that is. The senior centers in Baltimore County offer emergency food boxes to its members upon request, but I’ve yet to see/hear anyone ask for one…no idea how long those last either. Wonder when the last time was that anyone checked expiration dates on them? Again I type “hmm”…

I was not expecting a block of food. That was the best part!

Good for you all for getting the stuff to people who can use it before it goes wonky. That is a pretty good system you’ve got going, and I’m glad the kids were involved.
