Strange Space

There’s a weird side yard at my house that I don’t know what to do with. It is a small rectangular area that is only accessible from the back corner of the yard. I’ve thought about planting stuff there, but it’s not exactly full sun. I’m not really sure what the light exposure is. And it doesn’t rain here much, so there isn’t much water naturally.

For now, I’ve just been ignoring it. I look back there every once in a while. I’ve taken some pictures. Here’s one from two months ago:

And here’s one from now:

Maybe a groundcover of some kind? Maybe wildflower seeds? Maybe I’ll just use a string trimmer and chop everything to the ground. I don’t know. It’s so weird.

Well, whatever those are are doing pretty good. Yeah, maybe wildflower seeds – they’re known for being hardy and surviving in whatever they’ve got. Look at me, acting like I know anything about plants…..

Interesting space. I think I would put pavers down the middle to create a path, then plant a pollinators garden on both sides. I have had good luck with milkweed, wild and native. Foxglove is dramatic and takes up a lot of space. The butterflies love it and it doesn’t require any care once established. It does grow tall so put it against the walls. The bees, butterflies and summers are fun to watch.
