Sentimental Sustenance

Yesterday I did some grocery shopping, and saw something in the meat department I had not seen before – Maryland-style crab cakes! They were in the same area as pre-marinated meats.

I had to try one:

It was pretty good. It seemed kind of dry though. Maybe I cooked it too long? maybe it had too much breading? I might try them again, but they weren’t as good as I had in Maryland.

I also saw another blast-from-the-past food: roast beef hash!

My dad liked to eat this a lot. I got some at ate it as well. It tasted good – like comfort food.

You kid yourself, young man, if you think ANYWHERE outside of Mason-Dixon territory will have true Maryland crab cakes…but nice try! I know some folks around here prefer them for Thanksgiving over the traditional turkey or ham; not us. (We did have some breaded oysters, but as a side dish of sorts.)

Anyhow, I too enjoy some corned beef hash, about once/year, slathered in ketchup. Hope yours brought more fond memories of days gone by.

I’ve never had hash. Maybe that’s the next culinary adventure! 🙂
