Someday Summons

I got a jury summons in the mail. It’s my first one since I moved to LA. In Baltimore, I got them once a year. We’ll see if this is the beginning of an annual cycle.

In LA, when you get a jury summons, you’re on call for a week. You’re supposed to call in every evening to see if you need to report to the courthouse the next morning. Then you wait to see if you get called for voir dire.

My principal told me you can request to be rescheduled, so I set it for the summertime when I get back from Nebraska. .

I’m not sure if I do want to be called or don’t want to be called. It could be interesting, and I do feel a little bit of the “civic duty” thing. We’ll see what happens in July…

DUN DUN! (That was the Law and Order sound.). How exciting! I’ve had a couple of summons but have always written a note asking to be excused.

Best of luck with all that. I understand your mental conflict…

In MD, at least, once you hit a certain age (ahem) service is optional – you can if you want to fulfill “civic duty” but you’re not required. Personally, now that I am retired, sitting in a waiting room watching an old movie and the PSA about how much your service is appreciated doesn’t sound as awful to me as it once did. Still haven’t been summoned since I got a two summons within a short period of time because one was sent to my numeric address (32nd Street) while the other was sent to some alphabetic one (thirty-second street), thinking I was two different people. We got that straight right off!
