I had my seventh graders do medieval-style illuminated letters in History class. They could choose to do their first or last initial. I hung them on the wall yesterday, and after hanging the first papers, had accidentally spelled “Carl”. I decided to try to fill the next row with letters that sounded like a last name, and came up with “Smaven”.

The next row down doesn’t spell anything, because I ran out of vowels.
I went looking on the internet to see if there was really a “Carl Smaven” somewhere out there, but there isn’t, according to Google. But now when you search for “Carl Smaven”, you will find him here.
So Google just told me that I could “listen” to Smaven on Youtube…but it sent me to Carl Sagan when I hunted for the entire name. Hmmm…
You’ve just given me an idea: if one wanted to write stories and needed good character names, one could randomly type names int Google and see who/what came up. Apparently, Carl Smaven could be a physicist who enjoys music.
Ha! This was just what I needed to start the morning! That is hilarious, and their letters turned out beautifully. I’m a big fan of fancifying letters like that, and they did great!
