We started the morning at the Soldiers’ National Cemetery. It’s where Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address. One of the students read it out loud for everyone.

Next, we picked up a local expert, and drove the battlefield. It was rainy, which was an inconvenience, but it was pretty and green.

Then we went back to the museum for a movie and the cyclorama, a large cylindrical oil painting. The have lights and sounds that help tell the story.

The museum there is very good too. I took a picture of the inside of this knapsack. This soldier listed all of his battles. One was Knoxville, the place of my birth.

Next we drove to New York. I was glad for a chance to nap. When we got there, I heard a robin singing! There are no robins in LA. I took a picture of it:

We went up to the observation deck of Freedom Tower. Across the river in Brooklyn, I saw another tower. It looked like something from Lord of the Rings.

Next we went to Yankees stadium to see a ball game. The long-range forecast kept saying rain, but it ended up being really pleasant night. We ate dinner there. I had a hot dog. Mmm…. I also had peanuts in the shell! How fun!

Our last stop of the day was Times Square, where we had a professional take a picture of our group. There was a group of people dancing while someone filmed them:

We got back to the hotel at midnight. Whew! What a day!
Coolest part of today? That knapsack…
Good thing you weren’t at Yankee Stadium earlier this week – they beat the pant off the Orioles in a sweep of four games. Humbling…
I always say you cram so much into each day of those trips to the East Coast. This was more evidence of that. (Glad you stayed safe in Time Square after dark, too….)
Now go get some rest!!
No robins in LA? What??
I grow a little less envious of your trip when I see how much is packed in a day. All of that looks amazingly fun, but you all must be pretty exhausted. I pray you have energy for today!
