A while back, I bought a bag of flour to refill my flour jar in the kitchen. The jar looked kind of dirty, and I was going to wash it, so I just left the bag of flour on my counter top. I guess it sat there for a few weeks. By the time I got back to it and opened it up, it was full of weevils. Yuck. I threw it away, got a new bag, and put the flour in the flour jar right away. The new flour will stay weevil-free.
But then something bad happened. I found weevils in my cereal. Uh-oh. I threw it all away and got new.
I’ve decided all my food that contains grain will be stored in the refrigerator for a while. If the weevils don’t have anything to eat, maybe they’ll move on to some other place.
You look so fancy with your chilled cereal…….
Having weevils would make me mad after paying $50 for a box of cereal. That’s what it goes for, yes?
I learned the heard way in Hawaii to keep all grain products in Tupperware containers. Things I didn’t use regularly (like flour, pancake mix, breadcrumbs) I kept in Tupperware IN the refrigerator. Actually I am still doing that, since I had all those containers when I moved back to the mainland.
Thanks for your tips, Ann. I wondered if the solution was containers. I’ll have to start shopping around for them…
I have found that the containers sold in places like Target (my favorite store) work every bit as good as the more expensive Tupperware ones. I think that will take care of the problem, although I was told that sometimes the eggs are already IN the product and so you MIGHT still occasionally have a problem unless it is stored in the refrigerator. I think that is another reason why I started keeping flour, pancake mix, and rice in the fridge. But I don’t like to think about eggs already being in there…
