Wheat

I was in an Asian grocery store on Sunday, and as I was looking at all the crazy-exotic foods, I noticed something not exotic at all: a bag of unground, unprocessed, raw wheat kernels. Holy cow! My grandpa grew wheat in Nebraska, and when he harvested it, we would sometimes chew up wheat grains just like that. I remember it being delicious.

I decided to get the bag of wheat kernels. I had to try them again. The verdict? They are more dried out than the wheat we ate at grandpa’s farm, but they taste just the same. They taste like summer! And what a good snack: the whole package only contains 80 calories. My jaw would get tired way before I ever got through the whole package. Excellent.

...a really cheap snack, too!

Yesterday it was my overly-zealous spam filter that kept Lauren away. Today it’s her internet connection.

Thank you! It was like being a ghost or something. Stupid technology, keeping me at bay.

It’s all better now, though. I have never tried to eat plain wheat kernels, but now I totally want to try! I have some dried millet in the cupboard. Do you think that would be as good, or am I going to break a tooth?

I imagine your post tomorrow will be about an emergency visit to the dentist!
I can hear you crunching down the hall!

    Oh my, so many questions!

Are they as hard as corn kernels? Are they sold as is for snacking purposes like sunflower seeds or are they cookable? Are they salty?

In my own little world, I usually forget that everyone in th eworld hasn’t had the same set of experiences that I have. Silly egocentrism.

What that means is….Really? You people haven’t chewed on wheat kernels before? 😉

They’re awesome. Not salty. Not as hard as corn kernels. Can be cooked, but I think they would have a funny texture, perhaps something similar to barley or rice?

I loved Grape Nuts growing up – does that count? Hard, crunchy, wholesome goodness.
I actually went to a youth group costume party once dressed as a box of Grape Nuts – that’s when I had tons of artistic time on my hands.
Oh, how I miss my teenage years!

We only grew wheat once on the farm when I was little. I only have two memories of it. (1) Walking through the green wheat on the way to the waterfall. (2) Riding up the hill in a wagon full of grain eating them one at a time.
