Slowing Down

I’m getting to the point where I have to wait for some things before I can continue on the kitchen. The electrician comes tomorrow to look at what I want and tell me what time next week he can get things done. I can’t do the walls until he does his stuff. My truck is in the shop to repair the bumper and side view mirror, so I can’t go to the dump until I get it back Thursday or Friday.

In the mean time there are some smaller things I can do. Today I took out some metal grating in the wall. It was in one corner of the room. I hadn’t dealt with it yet because it was covered with black powder. Seeing how well my bandana kept out the plaster, I didn’t want to be inhaling all that mold. I got a real, live breathing mask. Nothing fancy, just the kind that covers your mouth and nose and has the pinchy metal thing to hang on to your nose.

After pulling down the metal, I saw why it was there. It was covering a smoke pipe! The black powder was soot. Yay! I wouldn’t die of mold! But I did suck some soot:
Black lung?

Here’s what the corner looks like now. I’m thinking this was the chimney for the original stove.
Chimney.

Cool! Have you considered leaving the brick as a backsplash? I know there are holes to the daylight outside, but maybe those could be mortared? It’s just so cool looking!
