Field Day

In the Spring, our school invites Lutheran elementary schools in the area to come and do some track and field events. It’s 3rd grade through 6th grade normally. This year there wasn’t much interest from the 6th graders, so it was mostly just 3rd through 5th. They do softball throw, soccer ball kick, some jumping competitions, sack race, three-legged race, and various runs and relays. The athletic department organizes it. The rest of us teachers do what they tell us to help make it work.

I have always been a “place-holder”. When the kids finish races and come running across the finish line, us place-holders grab them and bring them to the “record keepers”, who write down their names, grades, and schools. I have often been responsible for catching the 4th or 5th place kid, but this year I had 1st place. Whew! It was hard to catch some of them after they crossed the finish line.

Run, Forrest, Run!

Ha! You’re a place holder! Your new name is ‘Bookmark’.

    Dang, that wasn’t very funny.

Lauren, you are too kind. I was waiting, but nobody else took the bait either. Brad, as you may know, used to teach some middle school MATH back in the day…..and, what is the perennial place holder in MATH? That’s correct! However, I would NEVER tell Brad that meant that his new name was “Zero”!! [Besides, that name is already taken by a yummy white-iced nougat candy bar that tastes best frozen.] Brad is worth FAR more than that, IMHO. –a totally unbiased by-stander

        Ha!

Was it cold and cloudy? It’s looks like it’s cold and cloudy…just as every school track meet should be…

Huh, you had the honor of hanging out with the 1st place winners … suppose someone got wind of your jogging program?

One of my dogs names is Forrest … and he is a blockhead but runs like the dickens (what does that exactly mean, anyway). When we 1st got him we took him to the Puppy Park, and he made friends right away with another corgi & they took off running. Her name? You guessed it … Jen naaae. No joke.

You had nearly all of Lloyd’s favorite quotes! Others: “I’m sorry I had a fight at your black panther party.” “I think you should go back home to GREENBOUGH ALABAMA!” “Because you told me to, Drill Sargeant.” I’d write all the ones he’s quoting to me right now, but I can’t type that fast.

One little known fact about Charles Dickens is how into fitness he was. In between novels, he would be running hither and yon. In fact, seeing Mr. Dickens loping about London became such a common sight that people soon said of anyone who ran often/fast/far that he “ran like The Dickens.”

This would be similar today to what we might say if Oprah were to take up jogging. …and… cue The Oprah Rant.

You little dickens, you . I had to verify … cause I wasn’t sure if you were kidding or not … you’re not kidding; hey, if it ever happens that Trivia Pursuit is being played, and I’m there & you’re there … can I PLEASE be on your team?

        • Lloyd

Really? I thought I was just making that up.

        • Brad

My guess was that it was a shortened form of “Run like the Dickens was chasing you.” and that the Dickens is the Devil.

          • Peggy

Actually, both answers are correct, per ask.com.

Or maybe those people just made them up …???

          • Lloyd

Yeah, I was thinking that Brad’s answer was the correct one. Well, I thought “the Dickens” was Chuck Norris, but same difference.

Brad, did you remember to spring forward? Not at field day … with the time … on the site.
