I haven’t had much time to garden lately, so yesterday I snuck in an hour after I got home from school and before I went to handbell practice. I pruned and tied up my butterfly bushes. I’m trying to train them to look like little trees. It’s taking a long time. This year, I’ve left two or three main branches intact. I’m hoping they will grow into “trunks” on my “trees”.
I want the butterfly bushes to grow straight and tall, so I need to tie them. I’ve tried various things over the years. Last year it was twine threaded through some aquarium tubing. The twine broke pretty quickly. This year I used pantyhose. I used it on my redbud and my gingko last year and it held up very nicely. I think it should do fine here too. It’s tough, but it’s stretchy, so it won’t hurt the branches. Plus, it comes in a variety of fashion colors!
Sigh. You foolish man. Those colors are completely wrong for their outfits. You should have gone with taupe or ‘nude’.
Taupe’s gonna be hard to find in MD; but if you find ’em, let me know where they are.
In the meantime, the bushes/trees look like they’re wearing fashionable scarves.
BTW: If you wanted a tree, why did you plant a bush?
