Lights Out!

Happy Mother’s Day!

I celebrated last night by lighting candles all over my house. It had nothing to do with the fact that lightning knocked out the power at 8:30pm.

I came to realize that most of my pastimes at home are electronic. Last night I read by candlelight for a little while, then decided to go to Home Depot for some potting soil so I could plant some seeds in pots. It was eerie driving through my neighborhood with no lights except my headlights. It looked sort of post-apocalyptic or something.

After getting home with the soil, I started to get tired, so I just got ready for bed and went to sleep. The power came back on at 1:00am.

Glorious electricity teasing me from across the street.

So…when the electricity came back on, were there any unexpected things on in your house? Did you remember to turn off your vacuum? Your white noise maker? Any surprises?

I was surprised my window air conditioner came back on. It has a digital interface, so I assumed I’d have to start it up again. The cold woke me up.

How very interesting. A couple of nights ago I didn’t turn on any lights upstairs while it was still pretty light outside, and it really made it feel like bedtime. (It was 7:30.) How would life be like if we went back to just using sunshine as our main source of light?

I guess living in a cave would be right out.

How did the cavemen do it? Hmmm…

I think they lit small animals on fire. But that’s right out for me. Ned wouldn’t burn very well since he doesn’t have hair. Unless I soaked him in something… Hmmm…

Well, I guess he’s lucky my power came back on.

Pfennig could burn for a long, long time since she’s mostly fat. My little candle…

Electronics, friends or foes? What I miss most when the power goes out, and start to actually have withdraw symtoms, is TV. Honestly, how did people survive for centuries upon centuries without it? Did the quality time they had to spend with each other make for a better life or add to their early deaths?

(PS) It’s time to clean the Cocoa Puff milk or at least put a place mat over it.

I think they tended to have a lot more kids back then. This would eat up time on both ends.
