Gettysburg

I went to Gettysburg with Brent and family yesterday. It was my first time. Here are the highlights:

We started at the Visitor Center by watching the “Electric Map Presentation”. It was very informative, but looked as if they were using authentic Civil War era technology. I was glad we started there though, because it gave me an overview of the whole area (and a history lesson on the Civil War)
It used electricity!

We did the driving tour. Our first stop was the battlefield from the “Pickett’s Charge” side of things.
Looking for the Copse of Trees. Except Daniel. He was looking at me.

We spent a lot of time on Little Roundtop. What happened here was astounding.
Gorgeous landscape... Lots of death.

Here are Brent and Sandra reading about the breastworks.
(Heh heh heh.. I said “breastworks”.)
Heh heh heh.

In conclusion, I would highly recommend Gettysburg as an historical information site. Civil War buffs will really like it, but so will others because it’s interesting, active, and a beautiful setting. Plus, there’s ghosts.

What the heck are ‘breastworks’? Did they do a lot of implants there?

    • Brad

I went back to the original picture so I could zoom in and read it. The sign doesn’t say why they’re called “breastworks”, but it refers to the rock walls the soldiers built so they could hide behind them while shooting. Brent said they were called breastworks because they were breast high. I’ll go with that explanation.

Here is the sign, if you want to read it for yourself.

I think ‘breast high’ really has something to do with one’s age, at least with women.

        • Peggy

HA HA HA!!!!! You way too funny!!

Written in true Middle School, “what I did for summer vacation” form. Lest you think that went unnoticed.

Arron and I went there 3 years ago. It is truly an amazing place. I think my favorite place was the Devil’s Den and the Slaughter Pen. Miles and miles of fields, and suddenly there are massive rocks that could only be placed there by the hand of God. Incredible. And interesting about the sharp shooters between there and Little Round Top picking each other off. How could they do that without a modern scope?
We were going to go back the following year; the night we were going to leave, I fell down the basement stairs and badly sprained both ankles, but that’s a whole other story…
What I want to say is that I love, love, love Gettysburg. Everyone should make a point to get there at least once.

P.S. I wanted to rearrange the soldiers in one of the old timey exhibits, but Arron wouldn’t let me. 🙁

Four score and seven years ago ….

I meant to ask you if you made it to Devils Den. You could have gotten some really good pictures of the kids (and maybe you) climbing on those rocks.

My favorite time to go to Gettysburg is in the fall. If you go again, try eating at either the Dobbin House Taven, built in 1776 … complete with slave hideout & natural spring that was used as a frig back then …. or The Farnsworth House that has umpteen bullet holes from the Civil War on the side of the building & they claim is truly haunted. Then travel to the battle field at night … IF YOU DARE!!!

Ok, maybe I’m not as cultured, but I remember being taken there when I was 7. Dad was a big Civil War buff. I remember a big work-up on what a great place we were headed to in the camper… and it was a field.
Give me a break though… I had just seen Star Wars for the first time and nothing was going to impress me after that!

Here’s my favorite pic from the day:

These are ghosts seeking revenge, right?

    Can I embed pictures?

    There's no smiling in 1863.

My…. what a lovely day… Sandra… must have had. (The rest of look like you’re going to do some harm to someone, perhaps each other.)

  12. Brent

Lauren, we were at the most solemn spot on the battlefield and I was behind the camera giving a long lecture about how horrible the carnage was, all the while telling everyone to look sad.

Brad, looks like you *can* embed. Was my html ok?

Notice who’s the most convincing actress, and don’t I know it: Anna!

    • Brad

When you try to embed as a “commenter”, the software deletes your “embed” code, so I can’t even see what you typed. I had to sign in and use my EDIT powers as Bradaptation Overlord to embed the picture. I uploaded the picture to my site first, then used my regular steps for posting a picture.
