I was getting into my truck in the morning and looked up from grabbing the door handle just in time to see a praying mantis on the drivers side window. Geez it scared me – a big ol’ bug right at chest height looking at me with it’s freaky big eyes. And praying mantids don’t make any noise, but I’m pretty sure I heard this one hiss at me. That shot of adrenaline was one of the best wake-ups I’ve had in a while. It was better than coffee.
After I got over the shock of the mantis monster on my truck window, I scrambled for my camera. I got one picture and it jumped off the window into the darkness.
But of course I am glad to see a praying mantis in my yard. They are a sign of a healthy garden. I hope he or she finds a mate and leaves baby mantids all over the place. Then maybe I can get a shot of adrenaline every morning. That would be awesome!
You know they can eat hummingbirds, right? I think this one had it in for you, so watch out – Zorak’s after you!
And when you saw it…what was your exclamatory word of choice? I know which one I would have used…
I would have used, “Awwww … how sweet!”
My money’s on Brad saying, “That’s a hell of a thing.”
Of course he hissed at you … you disturbed his quiet devotion time … I would have hissed at you too!
(leaving for work while it’s still dark, honestly!)
I think he hissed because he was afraid he would end up buried in the backyard!
I never knew that was a sign of a healthy garden! Yay, we have a healthy garden, too! (Although it’s not really our doing…)
He/She hissed because he/she is a reincarnated bunny rabbit. BEWARE! 🙂
