Maint Reqd

The guy at the Toyota dealership told me that the Maint Reqd light is not connected to any sensors. It’s just a light that comes on every 5000 miles to remind you to change your oil. He thought it was pretty dumb. He showed me how to reset it: While the car is off, press in and hold the odometer button. Then turn the key to the on position while continuing to hold the odometer button. Little dashes flash across the odometer screen letting you know the light has been reset for another 5000 miles.

But don’t tell anybody, because I don’t think this is common knowlege. If word got out, Toyota might send their elite team of shadow assassins to “take care of” those who know this.

The Toyota people couldn’t get my steering wheel problem to repeat itself, so they couldn’t tell what was going on. They checked fluids and belts and other basics and everything seems to be okay. Maybe it was a caffeine-induced hallucination. At least the work was all free – my truck is still under warranty. Whew!

The useless light.

Don’t you wish WE were still under warranty? We could get repaired at no cost – no copay, no deductible, no extra cost for upgrades. That would be sweet.

I think they need to make warranties for babies – they’re brand new for goodness sake, and those little buggars are pricey for being brand new…

If we had warranties, I’d be afraid I’d be deemed a “lemon” and then I would be melted down and reused & all of society would be infected. (hey, this could be a great sci-fi novel … gotta go.)

    YAY!!!

Your light is easier to reset than mine…in Jake (he’s my car for those of you not privileged enough to have met him) it requires the removal of a panel and a bunch of button pushing…

I’m envious. So is Jake, he doesn’t like having his panel parts exposed.

      OK Beth – TMI!!

So are you going to write all over the outside of your truck, “Warning: I could lose control at any time!” Although, people might think that you were either full of rage or have… other issues.

Our car had been doing that occasionally for about a year (the power steering dropping out). In early August, Arron called me because he was stranded on the side of the road. Long story short, the power steering line had burst spraying oil all over the power steering pump and alternator. When I told the mechanic about how the power steering would drop out from time to time, he said that was probably due to the line becoming corroded, and getting ready for it’s assplosion. The kicker is they corrode from the inside out, so you can’t see that it’s deteriorating.

Now, if my mechanic was feeding me a line of bull just to make me feel better about dropping $800 on my car, please don’t tell me.

This all sounds like “car talk” on NPR. Now Karla and Brad will be Click and Clack.
