Welcome to Brad's online memory archives.

Time for Repotting

My Phalaenopsis orchid has been looking a little root bound for a while now. I have finally repotted it in a larger container. I was surprised to actually find a bag of orchid potting mix at my house. In fact, it was in the first place I looked. I hadn't used that bag of potting mix since 2005, when I last repotted. Is my memory getting better?

I have touted the Phalaenopsis as the easiest flower ever, and I'm going to stand by that. I would think that even Lauren or Peggy could grow one. Site it well, then keep it watered, and you get months of flowers. Looking through my old memory archives, it looks like I have a while before the bloom spikes start, and I won't have flowers until January. But they sure are a welcome sight in the dead of winter.

My picture is too strongly back-lit, but you get the drift.
The sandwich ingredients were not used in the potting of the orchid.

I had to remove some aerial roots.

You have a sandwich maker! You could make all kinds of cool food in that! What’s your favorite?

Also, “keep it watered?” – that’s the hardest part of gardening!

    • Brad

It is Denis’ sandwich maker. He toasts peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in it.

    • Peggy

I think we’ve been presented with a challenge Lauren… Should we each get ourselves a Phalalalaopis & test Brad’s tout? Or should I just send you $20. to burn in your Chiminea?

Now a Chiminea— that’s something that deserves a great big ballyhoo!!!

Why no sandwich makings in potting?

  3. Annette

And since the lid is up, (is it a man thing?), there are probably potting things in the sandwich maker. Is the correct word here, **jibblie** ??

  4. Deanne

I just noticed that we have the exact same sandwich maker. Love it. But we don’t put PB & J in it.

Because of the cruel conditions under which (is that one word like sandwich or two like good witch?) Jellies are raised?

      • Brad

Jelly abuse is a dark spot on humanity’s heart. A dark, grape-flavored spot.

I have never laughed such an embarrassing laugh in my life!

I like how this post turned into the sandwich maker post and the orchid has become the background.
I like cheese and turkey sandwiches in mine.

What’s with the peanut butter on top of the bread? Doesn’t it smoosh the bread? Denis…what are you thinking? No one likes a smooshed sandwich.

    • Deanne

I like smooshed sandwiches, as does the entire Marino family, but the best ones have cheese in them that can melt and get all yummy & hot.

    • Brad

Ha! I actually wrote this post for myself. I needed a record in the memory archive that said when I repotted so I would know when to do it again. It should happen every two or three years.

But I have to say, all the talk of warm sandwiches intrigues me. I have never used the sandwich maker because warm peanut butter and jelly doesn’t sound good to me. Warm turkey and cheese sounds interesting…

It’s good to see you again kiwe. We missed you. 😀

      • Peggy

        Yay kiwe—you funny!!

The only thing I’ve ever made in my sandwich maker is pizza pockets. Mmmmm….butter both sides of the bread….fill with Don Pepinos pizza sauce, some mozzarella cheese, some pepporoni or whatever, & a touch of Italian seasonings. Oh sooo good!!!

        • Beth

Mmmm…pizza pockets…maybe a sandwich maker is in order for Beth for Christmas? Eh?

      • kiwe

Thanks! When school is in I loose anything that has to do with wit. I still read what you all say, but my brain is fried already. I blame it on the 4th grade trumpet class and the 6th grade drummers.

Sandwich maker?! I thought that was the baby Belgian waffle maker we got from my brother-in-law a few Christmases ago…looks in the same pristine condition, too…but ours looks new due to disuse. Glad to hear y’all put your counter chatchkis (sp?) to good use! We barely even dust them – just keep them a few years to assuage (sp?) guilt – then default to the Mission Society, Goodwill or Salvation Army. My motto: if it can’t be fixed in the microwave, it can’t be a necessary item in my diet.
