Middle School Wrestling

Yesterday after school was the first practice for Middle School Wrestling. I’m coaching for the first time. Ever. Thankfully, Kim’s husband Dave is bringing his coaching experience and wrestling knowledge to the practices.

Yesterday’s practice went pretty well. I’m not very confident right now, but I do have teacher skilz and I do understand Middle School boys, so I think things should be okay. My biggest worry is that I won’t be able to help the boys use good form. Learning proper form is what this age level is all about. I got a book to help me. It was the only one at the bookstore, but I think it’s actually the one that my brother-in-law Harold recommended. He’s a Master Coach of wrestling, so he knows what he’s talking about.

I also am a little worried about the Early Dark. Because I won’t be going home until after 5pm every day, I won’t see the sun until after wrestling is over in March. I don’t think a book will help me there…

I'll be an expert in no time!

Way to go, Coach! I think I’ll get you a whistle for Christmas!

If I were a wrestler, I would totally have music coming in my ear thingies. Preferably the theme to ‘Rocky’.

  2. Lloyd

Do you teach them the Pile Driver first or the People’s Elbow?

    • Brad

After a week of conditioning, we’ll start them with the simple use of folding chairs across the back. Then we’ll get to the more advanced tecniques.

That IS the book that Harold recommended. Well done Coach Brad. (Heh. That’s sounds a little funny to me. You coaching. Almost as funny as Coach Lloyd.)

So I have a little problem with middle school wrestling (no offense to Brad or Beth’s husband). I saw a kid get his back teeth broken out at one of our matches here at my school. Both coaches said that it was just an accident, and both boys had all the safety gear on, but it freaked me out. Blood all over the mats, little boys crying. It gives me the heeby-jeebies.

I have a suggestion for the “no sunshine for months” problem: use one of the goshawful bright road illuminators all those construction crews have in place where they are working on Baltway and I-95 ramps – maybe even move wrestling practice outdoors near one of them! You ‘ll never notice the Early Dark anymore. You may have after image on the back of your retina for a while, but I doubt it would leave permanent damage. Probably. Not.

HA! “Baltway” I made up a word by fusing “Bawlmer” to “Beltway”.

How bad a typist clever am I?!
