Last Legs

I’ve been having trouble with my cell phone lately. First, I was noticing that the phone didn’t open fully. The hinge felt grindy. I didn’t force it open, but it made talking a little awkward. Now it’s started to have other problems as well.

On Wednesday, I opened it to see if I’d missed any calls, and all the screen said was “Check SIM card.” Yikes! I barely know what that is, and I certainly don’t know how to “check” it. I opened the back of the phone and jiggled the card, then turned the phone off and on again. Thankfully, that worked.

Yesterday, my phone spontaneously turned off. I wasn’t using it at the time, but still, I’d rather not have it just shut itself off in my pocket.

So I guess when I had a cell phone scare ten months ago, I opted for the “pretend everything’s okay” route. I should have been researching phones. If I didn’t have to switch providers, I would totally get a Jitterbug. Instead, I have to find some other stripped-down model. Why all the bells and whistles? Doesn’t anybody want just a phone?

Of course I couldn't get it to misbehave for a picture. I had to simulate the problem.

Oh, please please please get a Jitterbug anyway! I am dying to see one of those little guys – especially the three-button model! It would be difficult to play Bejeweled on it, though.

I wanted to get a Jitterbug since my stupid eyes can’t see anything on the phone without my reading glasses. But my kids wouldn’t let me. They said I can’t get one until I’m a grandmother!
Considering you are close to 40 and will soon be needing reading glasses, I guess the Jitterbug might be the way to go!

This is clearly the phone you need. Simple, easy to understand, large display.

      Is that real?

We’ll be in the hunt for new phones…probably this summer sometime as we (Harold and I, we have the same model of phone, and they are the same age…like twins) are having weird issues. They shut off unexpectedly, for no apparent reason. They sometiems have trouble picking up towers. In the middle of Lincoln.

I like Motorola phones. I also like phones that aren’t so dang gadgety. Just a phone.

So. Tell me how your searching goes.

Your phone has a bell & whistle on it? I would think that would come in handy now that you’re a coach.

      HA! Good one, Pegster!!

Do you text? If so, you should consider a QWERTY keyboard.

    • Brad

I do text. I was kind of hoping to develop the weird skill that some kids have of being able to text without looking, so I thought I might stick with a numeric keypad.

Last year I had multiple goofy problems with my phone. I bought a used battery off ebay ($4 or $5) and the problems went away. Prior to my problems, I had submerged my phone in water. The battery had swelling so much I couldn’t keep the back on.

Brad, did you drop your phone in poo water the other day?

I don’t think Verizon is your carrier, so this data may not do you much good, Brad … but maybe the Pesters? Anywho, you are exactly correct about how difficult it is to find a cell phone that is “just a phone”. Last year about this time I went cell phone shopping (something about turning in my work cell, but I choose to forget the details to that sordid tale right now…) and since Thurman already had an account with Verizon for his cell, the Verizon store in the Avenue was a logical stop. You’d’ve thought I was asking for the moon when I suggested “just a telephone” – no additional features. After an arduous search, the salesperson came up with one single model – the only one, he alleged, Verizon makes any more – called the Coupe. At the time it was under $40 and it truly is just a phone. [OK, and a calculator, stopwatch, and the other tools, but no photos, no music storage capability, no yadda yadda yadda.] That’s “the Coupe”…like the pretty-doggone-stripped style 2-door auto, see? I like it. It’s basic black with a little blue swish on the faceplate to match my bright blue car. No idea if they come in colors or not…or if they are even still in production for that matter! So, like I said, this information may be fairly useless.

    –Queen of useless data

Verizon has simpler phones but contracts – Jitterbug doesn’t have any contract.
