Raising the Roof

Yesterday while I was at school a bunch of guys tore off my roof.

My bank loan went through, and I’ve been trying to remember to call the roofing company to tell them I had the money. I remembered to call on Monday. They started work yesterday. I’m very excited. It has taken them one day to pull the old roof off. Only one worker was still there when I got home yesterday. He told me everything went pretty smoothly. He said there were two patches of rotten wood under the roof. I expected a lot of rotten wood, so that was pretty happy news. I wish I could go up there to see it, but I don’t know if I could handle the height. The guy said that if it doesn’t rain today they will get the roof replaced and will begin on the front and back porch roofs. It’s going to rain today, so I don’t know what that means. I guess I’ll find out.

When I scheduled the work to be done, I asked about the pond. The lady said I should cover it. I’m glad she did. A lot of black crumbly stuff came off the old roof. That probably wouldn’t be so good for the fish I want to add this spring.

Good job, Tarp!

Yikes! Now you have no roof & it’s going to rain…I hope you have alot of extra tarps for inside.

Come on Peggy, it’s not like the tore off all the mold growing under the roof. Brad’s stuff will be fine.

Was it nice sleeping under the stars last night? 🙂

Have your neighbor’s already replaced their roof?

    • Brad

No, but it’s okay because there’s a curb separating the two roofs. I did forget to tell my neighbor this was happening, though. I feel bad about that. I’m told that having your roof ripped off is pretty noisy.

It depends on how loud your neighbors are on a regular basis. If they or their pets are loud all the time, I say don’t worry about it. I probably will not tell my neighbors when I do loud work. Their @#%$^!#* dogs used to wake me up between 5-6:30 almost every morning.

……………uh…………..I’m sorry………on behalf of your real neighbors.

–owned by loud watchdog-type muttley who gets up with us at 5 a.m. and “goes to work” at once, protecting us from the garbage trucks, robins, squirrels, bunnies, and anything else he can find to bark at at that hour……..

The noise factor depends on whether they applied the shingles by hammer and nail (the Old Fashioned Way) or by staple gun. The latter – used by many roofers nowadays, I was told – is faster and thereby over sooner, but the former holds better through wind and rain and miscellaneous weather disturbances. We had our shingles hammered on and have not lost one that we know of in 17+ years.

[…which begs the question – could it be time for a new roof for us as well??]
