Welcome to Brad's online memory archives.

A Day in Los Angeles

The friend Denis is visiting works at the J. Paul Getty Museum. His name is Paul. He had the day off yesterday, so he took us on a tour. The museum is on a hill, so we had to take a tram to get to the top.

There were many cool views on the way up.

The architect of the museum used a theme of 3 foot by 3 foot squares. It was in the floors, windows, and walls.

It almost looked like it was made of giant sugar cubes. It wasn't. It was made of travertine marble.

We first looked at some paintings, then some rooms furnished with period furniture and sculptures. I liked this bed. It was ginormous.

Too bad it would never fit in my room.

We took a break to walk down some outside stairs. It was a perfect opportunity for a senior picture:

I wasn't wearing a ring, so I couldn't do the 'hand on chin' pose.

Paul is an expert on the life and work of a ground-breaking photographer named Paul Outerbridge. He gave us lots of background info on a show of Outerbridge’s work at the Getty. It was cool.

I couldn't take pictures of the display so here's the introduction board.

I'll arrive in Baltimore around midnight if this doesn't happen.

At dinner, I met a friend of Paul’s who has lurked a little at Bradaptation. Denis told Paul about Bradaptation and Paul told Gene. Gene visits with some regularity. It was fun to talk with him. If you comment today, say “hi” to Gene!

After dinner, Gene drove us to Hollywood, where we walked the sidewalk in front of the Kodak Theatre. It was awesome. I had a lot of trouble deciding whose handprints to get a picture of. Because of Vegas, I decided it had to be Frank Sinatra.

It's a little blurry. I did it my way.

So that’s the Getty Museum?! I know I’ve seen that unique structure used as a backdrop for something with Chad Lowe in it – a TV series we used to watch – but, due to my age, now I cannot for the life of me remember which series. Argh! If it comes to me at, say, 3 a.m., I’ll give you a call. [Meanwhile, does the fact that Denis’ friend’s name is the same as the middle name of the man to whom the museum is dedicated mean they are somehow related? Or is it just a job requirement for that place to have a first name like one of Getty’s? If you met any other employees named “Getty”, for instance, that should help answer the question.]

…and the usual flaming plane photo means that soon your tootsies will be on local soul again, so, safe travel – don’t lose your luggage or your lunch – see you in person again soon, I hope. (Insert broad smile here.)

    P.S.: hygiene!

Hi, Gene! Come and comment with us – it’s a fun party!!

That is a very cool museum. Did you nap on the bed despite the rope across it? You could re-create its luxury with a hula hoop and some clearance curtains. 🙂
