Redbud Pruning

When I planted a redbud tree in front of my house, it was my understanding that it was a smallish tree that had a vase-like growth habit. This tree is not vase-like, and it doesn’t seem that smallish to me either. My last trim job was in September 2008. I guess it’s been a while, but cutting branches off a tree is hard work. I would rather never have to do it. But the branches were blocking the sidewalk again. When there aren’t leaves on them, they threaten to poke eyes, for goodness sake.

BEFORE:
The branches were getting so low I could hardly even duck under them.

AFTER:
I had to cut some seriously large branches.

The prune job is especially noticeable from the side:
Seriously large.

I hope the new cuts don’t get infected or filled with bugs or anything. It would be a huge pain to have to cut the whole tree down.

On the plus side of things, my trip to the dump was awesomely smooth. No more emails or phone calls necessary. Also on the plus side, my back has been hurting like crazy lately, but this vigorous activity has seemed to make it feel better. Will that always be true? If my back hurts I should just exercise it? Seems weird. I’ll need to do further testing…

Nice pruning! Looks like… 1 one the sides, 2 on the top, no corners?

Are you sure you didn’t swap a tree for a shrub in those two pictures?! That IS an amazing pruning job, sir! And if it really seems to help your back, the crepe myrtle in our back yard…
