Chocolate Flowers

It’s been warmer lately. Things are moving more quickly in the garden. The dragon lily has bloomed and gone. I barely saw it. Weeds are springing up quickly. My irises are still blooming, but they’re running out of buds. It’s becoming more important that I walk through daily. And I love it.

It was nice to have morning time yesterday. The chocolate flowers (berlandiera lyrata) are blooming. They really do smell like chocolate. But only in the morning. As soon as the sun hits them and the air heats up, the fragrance is gone. When the plant is big enough, there will be enough blooms that the whole area around the plant will smell like chocolate and I won’t have to bend down to smell single flowers. I’ll be able to just stand there and suck in the chocolate scent.

Bonus: It’s a perennial. It’ll be back next year. Other bonus: It re-seeds itself. I’ll have more in the future.

Art shot. I think my lens was dirty, so it made things fuzzy.

I had chocolate flowers in my garden, but they didn’t come up this year. Bummer.
