Feggs

About a week ago, I noticed there were two frogs in my pond. I noticed it because one of them died. It was kind of out in the open swimming slowly among the water lily leaves, then it settled into the algae clump at the bottom of my waterfall. I thought it was just enjoying the cool water on its back, but after it hadn’t moved for 24 hours, I realized it was dead. I scooped it out and laid it in the garden.

But that night, I heard a bullfrog singing. It was a second frog!

Then yesterday, I went out to walk the garden and noticed something weird in the water lily leaves. Looking closer, I noticed it was frog eggs! I have frog eggs! Woo hoo! I had decided not to get any tadpoles this year because the guy at the garden center said they grow up to be bullfrogs and that bullfrogs are nasty and don’t get along with each other and often kill each other. I figured it was a waste of money. But now I’m going to have LOTS of tadpoles. For free! I just hope some of them survive the various predators. I’ll have to keep the fish well-fed.

A slimy glob of hundreds and hundreds of eggs.

So. The Mommy frog sacrificed her life for her babies? Laid her eggs and died? That happens far too often in the world of Mommies…

Oh yes, where was I? Congratulations on the frog eggs!! YAY for tadpoles!

Peggy was just telling me that the Luna Moth doesn’t have a mouth after it goes through metamorphosis. As an adult moth, it mates, then dies.

Mazeltov! (Is that how you spell it?)

Note: frog eggs cannot be used in omlettes.

Do you know that from experience?

That is so cool!! A Nature Center you have become…yes, hmmm.

Maybe you don’t want to keep the fish too well fed…..’cause as cute as frogs are, 100’s & 100’s would be a bit creepy don’t you think.

I’m a White’s Tree Frog. “This frog is a very hardy creature and a favorite pet of amateur frog owners, although some pet owners complain that they are not active enough.”

      I’m a Firebellied Toad.

They enjoy spending their day swimming and singing with other frogs of their species and become more active when not alone. Weird fact: Firebellied toads cannot extend their tongues like other toads or frogs. To feed, they must leap forward and catch their prey with their mouths. After they have grabbed a cricket or worm with their mouth, they usually use their fore-arms to help stuff food the rest of the way in. Then they squish their eyeballs down in their heads to push the food into their throat.

      HAHAHAHAHA!!!

Joanna just hatched 5 caterpillars into painted lady butterflies. She released them today.

Ya know, I wuz just thinkin’, tomorrow would be the first PTL luncheon in a while that didn’t have a bridal or baby shower as part of it. Now maybe there is a reason for a baby shower after all (how ever shallwe get word out?)! What does one get the human in charge of 10-to-the-umpteenth future amphibians? Ideas, anyone?
