Choir Practice

Last night, the Baltimore Choral Arts Society practiced at my church. Their regular practice location was unavailable, and one of the members knew about the good acoustics at my church, so they used it last night. It was really fun to watch. The director was very energetic. I got a little tired just watching him. But it was so amazing. The choir would sing a little and he would stop them to have them sing something differently. He’d give them the instruction once, and they’d do it. And the sound… It was beautiful.

I would love to sing in a big choir like this, even if it wasn’t as good (and there aren’t many that are). But the time commitment would be killer. The practice went from 7:30 to 10 last night. 10pm! I don’t remember the last time I was even awake at 10pm, much less out of my house. I think I would have to drop all my church and school commitments to be in a choir like that. I sneaked out around 8:40.

Ah well. At least it was fun to think about…

Basses and altos on the left, tenors and sopranos on the right.

How cool that they sat in the pews to practice! I’d join choir if we could sit in the pews for church. Long ago when Lloyd and I were in choir I missed singing with the congregation – the balcony is too far away.

(Did you peek at some music and sing along?)

I didn’t sing along, but I could have sung during “And the Glory of the Lord” from Handel’s Messiah. I mostly just closed my eyes and listened. Until I started falling asleep. Then I went home.

Firefox has a spell-checker, which I really appreciate. The spell-checker did not recognize the word “snuck” as the past tense of sneak. So sneaked is right? The internet seems to confirm that snuck is not the proper past tense of sneak, though it is sometimes used. I think I’ve been doing that wrong my whole life…

    • Lauren

My gut spell-checker says that ‘snuck’ is right.

    • Lloyd

You’ve never been particularly snucky anyway.

      • Peggy

        HA!! Now that is funny!!

    • Carol

Yea, I used to thunk ya’ could say “snuck” but apparently I was mistooken, too…

Sneaked is correct. However weird it looks. Nathan Bassett taught me that.

Wow – did you know they were coming ahead of time? If I hadn’t a church meeting myself down the road a piece, I would have loved to be there…Tom Hall is pretty amazing, I’ll agree. Good for you for being able to enjoy that a bit, even if you had to forfeit some beauty rest to do it.

    • Lloyd

Is that Tom T Hall? If so, I would like to second the, “Is pretty amazing” sentiment.

That song causes an incredibly strong memory seizure. I think my cousins had that on a 45 record, along with a song about a rubber biscuit, and a song called “The Streak”, and a song called “East Bound & Down”. We would listen to them in Uncle Dick and Aunt Gloria’s basement and sing along.

Excellent! So it was like a double treat….you didn’t have to direct AND you got to listen to some great music! I think you could have just sneaked into their tenor section & seanged sung along.
