A Venture into the Darkness

It’s been kind of a hard week. My sleep schedule is still hasn’t recovered from vacation, so I’m liable to have pass-out naps during my afternoon planning period and/or after school and/or when I sit on the couch in the evening. The rest of the time, I feel kind of lethargic.

Last night I decided to try doing something unusual: I went out for dinner. On Thursday. I went to Chick-fil-A. It was tasty. That same shopping center has a Harbor Freight Tools store. Since I was already living dangerously and being outside my house after dark, I decided to go. Stepping into the store, I was greeted by a strong smell of rubber, grease, and metal. For some reason, it smelled like summer. I stayed for quite a while, breathing in the delicious smell of warmness and light. I walked up and down every aisle, looking at all the weird tools that place carries. I didn’t buy anything, but I enjoyed myself immensely.

As I drove home, the darkness tried to reassert itself. It insisted that 1:30am was not an appropriate time to be driving around. But I knew better. It was only 7:13pm.

I had to take this picture quickly... The place was full of actual people getting actual hardware supplies.

Wow! The ceiling in your Harbor Freight is so high! No wonder it felt like summer with all that man-made sunshine.

My parents just sent me a plug-in car heater from HF in case my truck’s heat freaks out again. That store is like a miracle, isn’t it?

If nothing else, the strong overhead lighting perked you up, I imagine. Maybe you need to make that a nightly ritual – exposure to strong artificial lighting during the early part of the Early Dark. Then maybe the later part of the Early Dark won’t “get to you” as much? Just a thought. (Also a good excuse for regular shopping…)

    1) I did notice you blinking slowly (about to doze off) standing by the water fountain after school the other day when I stopped in to visit “my teacher friends”. It thought I might have to catch you.

    2) I’ve been in that Harbor Freight store – love it. I also get a big smile on my face when I walk into a Lowes or Home Depot simply from the smell of lumber. I guess I’m my daddy’s girl!

    3) Hang in there – the days are getting longer every day 🙂 my friend.

Hehe….I like those smells too. And gasoline. Hey Yankee Candle — when are you going to release your new line — The Hardware, Garage & Repair Shop Collection.

Bet a lot more guys would buy candles then, eh?

I like the smell of diesel fuel from tour buses. Reminds me of choir tours in college.
